Tired of going around quoting for customers who never call back, tired of suppliers messing up an order and then having to deal with client fallout, tired of chasing up people for money, tired of “please can you just…”, tired of people not caring about doing decent work / being unreliable / not showing up.
There are some great moments but god sometimes I wish this was a little easier.

I got the same way and ended up getting a job, better pay and garanteed, no hassle, no stress, just an easier life

Quite ironic really as posters on here often complain that the builders never get back to them... if ever there was a case for matching this up ;)
I did what bright_Spark did in the end... Best move I ever made

Thinking of doing something similar at this point. It’s coming to the point where it’s just not worth the hassle.
Most recent project has turned into a massive grind.
Did the gutting and structural bits, client got on with me so went and got me to do the stud partitions, one thing leads to another and now I’m putting a new staircase and doing their kitchen.
Doing this along with all the other jobs I had already planned and feeling massively stretched, but I just can’t say no since I remember when I used to scramble for work.

It’s immensely aggravating.
Monday: quote for job, and say I can do next Thursday

Friday that week: client comes back with “queries”, answer back radio silence

Following Wednesday at 9pm, from client “so when are you coming tomorrow?”
o_O

And of course " the customers always right"

Went to quote for a couple loft hatches:

“I really want a large access hatch, couldn’t you just cut through those bits of wood in the ceiling?”

“Those are your roof trusses, no I couldn’t do that.”

“But they’re so skinny, I’m sure it’s fine, pleas just go ahead and do it.”

Needless to say I took the job and cut through the trusses without a second thought after having been given those nuggets of brilliance from the home owner master builder.

It’s a hard grind. I think the biggest problem is that for a long while (until you are big enough to employ some degree of admin to a business). You are on the tools, part time accountant, part time shopper, part time everything. I think unless you are aiming to get above the parapet at some point it’s always a hard slog. Also some people also don’t like moving away from the tools to be stuck dealing with more “office” related tasks.

ever thought about tendering for larger contracts? So you are not dealing with the daily grind of quotes etc

I always took on commercial and industrial work in preference to residential and private. So much less hassle I always found.

When wages shot through the roof as nobody can get people, I jumped ship and should have done so years ago. There is no advantage to being self employed nowadays
