Tired

It’s a hard grind. I think the biggest problem is that for a long while (until you are big enough to employ some degree of admin to a business). You are on the tools, part time accountant, part time shopper, part time everything. I think unless you are aiming to get above the parapet at some point it’s always a hard slog. Also some people also don’t like moving away from the tools to be stuck dealing with more “office” related tasks.

ever thought about tendering for larger contracts? So you are not dealing with the daily grind of quotes etc

Have had a go but have the level of admin and work to quote for them is just a massive time sink.
I don’t know I just feel stuck on a hamster wheel right now. Been doing 6/7 day weeks since January and am beginning to feel more and more burnt out.

what’s the pay like compared to other areas of work?

must confess i did see that on your profile, promise it was just a slip of the finger.
It is excellent pay, lots of training involved as it is different to normal electrical work as we are the DNO for the power and the rest of it is general electric, all mainly 3 phase and distribution to lighting splitting into single phase per circuit

been there and worn the t shirt, it isnt a great life being self employed, I hardly had any time for myself. Now I get bored and look forward to going to work.

You do need a head for heights though as you are mainly always working from your hoist on your van, we go max 15 meters which at first is quite scary but you quickly get used to it after a few months

Deal with lightning protection as well as other normal stuff at work so used to hanging off 15 story buildings, dangling with a £1300 clamp meter like the end of lock stock. Nearly dropped it the other day.

if it’s and conciliation, it’s 10:50pm and I'm still up filling out f’ing paperwork. No one mentioned all this when i changed careers. Lol.

We do Lightning conductors too on minsters and churches mainly as we look after them for the Parishs

might look in to it. Miss working on the tools tbh. Sounds interesting as well. Apart from having to wear steals again lol.
it is reall interesting, different most days, no steels required, it is all non conductive now, our boots cost around £900 they are cavlar and plastic inserts, all clothing is flash and flame proof.

Tired of going around quoting for customers who never call back, tired of suppliers messing up an order and then having to deal with client fallout, tired of chasing up people for money, tired of “please can you just…”, tired of people not caring about doing decent work / being unreliable / not showing up.
There are some great moments but god sometimes I wish this was a little easier.

I feel you. You spend time drafting the quote, and they end up not returning a feedback or anything. I would appreciate a call and hearing a no on the quote than left hanging. :D

It's frustrating I know.

I found a thread here that might help lightening up the mood: https://community.screwfix.com/threads/the-joke-thread.250807/
