   if soft wood spindles,handrails,skirtings ect are to be stained do you still need to "knot".bit worried you woild see dark unsightly marks through the stain .?

   notting not needed on nots. Far more unsightly seeing notting show through stain/varnish, rather than nots, which are natural.
   
   So...... to sum up - don't not nots with notting.
