Our bathroom's toilet is fed from the wash basin's cold supply. The toilet cistern often does not fill after flushing, but I discovered that if I turn the cold tap on it does. Any thoughts as to what is going on here?

Probably a partial blockage within the float valve. Post some pics of the set up inside the cistern.

Been trying to add a picture, but all I keep getting is either "file too large" or "error occurred". Have you an email or other way I can get the picture to you?

    Reduce the file size.

The lever ,just below the red top of the valve,is affixed to a large black float.
Is the lever and float moving freely ? Try lightly pulling up and down the lever. If it moves freely ,there is a problem within the valve. You can try to strip it and renew parts , or just fit a new valve complete ( cost around 12 quid).

Seems to have worked. I just took it off and put it on again. Cheers
