Hi,

I want to put 4 off 6x6ft open trellis panels next to an open field. What depth and size of post would you use please?

I'm open to advice, I have a sledge hammer but not hole digging 'scissors'
I would concrete them in personally but it’s obviously up to you. I’ve found these post hole diggers on Amazon for £30 that would make it easier.

you’d just need some postcrete for the hole. You just fill the hole a bit with water, tip the bag in and give it a mix. Post is pretty solid in 5/10 mins.

If you want it to last, use 8' in old money concrete posts, you can always disguise ("weather") them. You could otherwise use 3x3 posts on stubs, or just 3x3 or bigger timber posts.

Bear in mind that unless you have the bottom of the trellis at ground level you won't have a full 2' in the ground. Ie bottom of trellis 6" off the ground = 18" post depth (with an 8' post and 6' trellis). That's assuming you have the top of the trellis level with the top of the post. If you want the post extending a bit above the trellis then that again reduces the post depth.

If you want the post to stand above the panel top for aesthetic then buy an extra post an splice a bit on top of the posts. Don't skimp on the structure of the fence it will end in tears.
