Two way light - top and bottom stairs problem

The light at the top of the stairs has 2 switches, one at the bottom of the stairs, one at the top;

I'm pretty sure both are one way switches, as at the minute both lights can turn the light on and off, but only the one that turned it on can turn it off (can't turn it on at the bottom, then go up the stairs and turn it off)

How would I rewire this into a two way switch to get the outcome I'm after? Thanks! PXL_20240708_111347030.jpg PXL_20240708_111253161.jpg

You have some pretty old wiring there probably 55+ years. It looks like it was two way hence the disconnected white so it is possible someone changed the switches but didn't get two way switches. Assuming there is no fault with the disconnected wire you could get some two way switches and see what happens.

I don't really know how to wire the two way switch if I got one... Would I just wire it the same and put the white cable in the l2 slots?

Is each of the switches is one gang (only one rocker on the front)? They look suspiciously like two pole isolator switches on the back, not two way switches. You have wiring for two way switching (the unused grey conductor) but looks like you have the wrong switches.

The wiring would be:

For switch with one cable:
  1. Grey on COM
  2. Red on L1
  3. Blue on L2
For the switch with two cables:
  1. Grey on COM
  2. Red and Red (one from each cable) on L1
  3. Black and blue on L2

Legend! This is exactly what I needed. Thanks so much. Will report back.
