Vaillant EcoTech fault?

My lad's an apprentice gas fitter with the local housing trust. They've been fitting a lot of Vaillants , but recently he's been to a number of Ecotec's with the same fault. It appears the seal around the burner has gone, allowing the burner flames to melt the air intake tube. He sent me this photo today and said he could get his fist inside the hole in it. Anyone else come across it?

There's been a warning out for a long time on ecotecs made between feb 05 and march 06. Vaillant will come out and replace the combustion chamber seals free. But I've been told that even some of the replacement seals have failed.

I have been beaten to it.

  6. The very odd thing is that many different manufacturers use the same or very similar combustion units made by Gianonni and its only Vaillant who have this problem.
