    Could you please tell me the difference between a service valve, a check valve and an isolating valve, and when each should be used? Sorry for asking such basic questions.

    service valve - as on radiator - one end internal (female) thread
    check valve - only allows water one way - as on outside tap
    isolator valve - often used in-line - both end same - used in pipes feeding taps / wc cistern etc
