Cant get the cistern to flush.
The cistern is a high level old cast iron type with a bell inside.

When you lift the bell up and release it the water starts going down flush pipe but doesn't get going enough to start siphoning?

I've checked flush pipe and replaced pan.

    Anyone else had this prob?

  2. maybe the bell or the seating for it is corroded

The bell and the cistern are both corroded.

I have seen other old style cisterns and they are the same but they still work fine.

I'll play around with the water level for a bit, see if that does it!

lift the bell out and clean as much rust and scale as possible

  5. the way the flush works depends on there being only air insiide the bell so that when you pull the chain the bell lifts and a siphonic action takes place when the air gets displaced by the water.
