I need to hang some vinyl wallpaper with a tile design in a bathroom. The current surface is painted, presumably with emulsion.

What's the ideal method of prepping the surface to take heavy-duty wallpaper adhesive? Sugar soap? Sandpaper the surface? Rub down with a wet beano (or maybe that's for afterwards...)?

Just rub down the emulsion and apply a coat of size. Allow to dry and hang the new paper. If the paint is gloss you will need to rub down to remove shine and then cross line first.
