Why do you think the SNP were depending on Labour having a good result? As someone who once actively campaigned for a Labour candidate - against the SNP - I can tell you there is no love lost between these two parties. They hate eachother.
I also see Ms Sturgeon already believes the SNP is the "Main Opposition" party in Westminster. (wonder what her maths results were at school? They must have been bloody dire, if she can't see that Labour have 176 more MP's than her party have)
Because, had Labour got a better result, it would have probably meant a coalition government with Labour "teaming up" with the SNP to ensure that Miliband headed a coalition government (or perhaps you think Sturgeon would have contemplated getting into bed with Cameron??)
In reality it shouldn't have been a problem for the SNP to form a sort of 'coalition' or any other 'teaming up' with Labour, as they are both essentially left-of-centre parties - except they hate eachother! But the Tory's scaremongering on this (the "SNP controlling Labour") almost certainly did Labour huge harm because the electorate didn't think it through - because stupid Labour didn't show it to be the non-issue it actually is. I mean, had Labour gotten into power - with the SNP's help - and wanted to, say, renew Trident, their new coalition partners (the SNP) would shout and vote "Ach NO!" but Labour would still win with the help of the Tories. The SNP would be irrelevant. Ditto with pretty much anything else; if the SNP disagreed with Labour on any issue, almost certainly the Tories with agree with Labour on that same issue. The SNP would be irrelevant. In reality, the SNP would have been irrelevant as a coalition partner - except when Lab and the SNP actually agreed on something - and went against the Tories together. The SNP would also shout "WE WANT ANOTHERRRR RRRREFERRRRRENDUM". Labour would say "*..." and the Tories would support Labour. Edited due to unsuitable language
What did you say DA ? . Not like you to get edited. Oh no you can't tell me ! Agree with what you say on SNP and voting in the Commons on Trident. The only hope for those of us with a truly fairer viewpoint and who are therefore "lefties" according to the Tory dominated press is that on the more sensitive issues the more moderate Tories (if there are any left) will vote with Labour & the SNP to defeat the government. But I think that the Whips will be being issued with bigger ones as we speak.
I've said for years now that the party whip system should be abolished. Each MP would then be free to vote how they feel about issues/motions raised in the house. At general election time a list should be published on the motions MP's have voted on and how they voted. We'd probably be in a better position to keep a good politician in or let someone else have a chance.
You can see now, how MPs voted on subjects that requires their vote. I'll see if I can find a link, I know I've looked to see how my local Tory, ****, sorry MP, voted.
It's Maggie Thatcher! After the Tory bankers caused the crash, the economy was growing about 1% under Labour, then Osborne took over and wrecked it for a few years by increasing Vat. Then we had the longest recovery ever due to their ignorance. It took Labour years to try to put right what Thatcher destroyed. Labour did make some mistakes. They did spend too much, but, most of it was investment in such things as schools. The Tory toffs have been using the crash as an excuse to hit the working people of Britain. Don't get ill, become unemployed (through no fault of your own), grow old or become dissabled because you will mean nothing to these people. They will class you scroungers. RIP Britain.
I can see that I am not alone in my "lefty" views . We are having a field day on the Mail Online. regarding re-appointment of IDS (I Did **** on the disadvantaged from a great height). I think his armed protection squad will need a few tanks and rocket launchers before long. I am not an anarchist and I don't like violence of any kind but predict riots in London within their five year term even though these might be by rent-a-mob.
Blimey, Malcy, you make me look like Ghenghis Khan... Yep, some peeps do conveniently forget that the last Labour party was hardly left wing, and also managed to balance the books each year despite their massive investment in the country's infrastructure (not that I expect many Tories to have thanked them for the investment in State schools and the NHS...) And IDS back into the slasher role - expect lots of despair. It is quite amazing how they manage to come up with things like the bedroom tax and also - with the help of the right-wing press - portray it as 'reasonable'. It takes the stories of individuals to really see what's happening. Like the mum who devoted her life to bringing up her severely disabled daughter until she passed away at the age of around 20 years. A few short weeks after she received 'the' letter to say "Oh - you have a spare bedroom now? Pay this or move out..." (Paul - SF no longer let me off with using 'f' even when it is only 'f'. Not so much unsuitable language, but an unsuitable letter... Fair enough, I guess )
You can't surely deny that the the country is in a better state than labour left it in. It was close to having the IMF running the finances again, the last time that happened Denis Healy was chancellor. As for the bedroom tax in theory it is a good idea. One person living in a three bedroom house can't be right, it's called social housing after all. Don't forget it's not a tax it's a cut in benefits so probably no rent paid. But there dose need to be a bit more flexible there are cases that need to be looked into more. But where there is a more suitable house then why not.
I'm not denying that at all, Proby. Although it's completely irrelevant. You don't know and I don't know what the economy would be like had Labour been in over the last few years instead of the Tories. But what I can probably say with near certainty is that there would have been less suffering amongst those who had little in the first place - whilst the richest 1% doubled their money. Doubled. It really isn't as simple as thinking that the Tories have boosted the economy; it's how it was done. The financial divide in this country is frankly immoral, and quite shocking cynical. And it's going to get worse.
When labour where voted out of government they gave me the impression they where glad to be out, I honestly think they didn't know what to do to improve things. The trouble is its easy to spend money you don't have and become popular but sooner or later it catches up with you. And then it's always going to look bad when cuts are made.
Yes and didn't Blair know it, hence the quick let Gordon take over, it'll look like it's all his fault and I can quietly slip off and make millions off the back of ******* the country over.
Sorry Proby and Phil, there's no point me trying to respond to facile comments like that. Och, let me try; when Cameron got in I bet he was rubbing his hands at the money he could make for his close friends in the city, whilst not punishing those really responsible for the recession. In fact I bet he had all them complete bankers around for a dinner party and told them "Don't worry folks, I'll cut your taxes and make the poorest squeak." See? Anyone can talk * It chust ain't an argument.
