Water penetration through rough cast render?

Hi all. Got a stone property which is rough cast rendered and painted with weathershield probably about 8 years ago. Render in very good condition and not blown anywhere. Got some damp patches on internal walls - these are just below ceiling height on ground floor. Externally, in roughly the area of the damp, there is a gutter down pipe which is tight up against the wall. Because of this, the area behind the pipe was not painted. Could this be a potential entry for penetrating water? The wall is south facing and the location exposed. It picks up some pretty bad weather (location is coastal, South West Wales). The other thing I was thinking is that because of tightness of the gutter to the wall, any moisture behind it can't escape very easily.
