When to replace hot water tank?

    Hi

We have a standard (I guess) hot water tank in our central heating system. My heating engineer, who services the boiler etc every year, says it need replacing as it may start leaking. (it's in the loft so this would be a nightmare).

I have absolutely no reason not to believe him, but is there anything I can check to be assured a replacement is necessary (they cost a lot more than I thought!). The tank is at least 13 old and has some visible corrosion around what looks like some sort of external thermostat (in my uneducated opinion!).

    Are newer tanks more efficient?

    Advice gratefully received...

Really need to see the tank to give any advice.
    You could try taking pictures.

    Thanks

Not really sure what to photograph so hopefully these show the general condition...(sorry, a bit dark in the loft for photos!)
