    Morning all,

We have a 3 storey 4 bed house with new plaster on every surface. We spray all our paint now as the speed is phenomenal specially when it’s an empty property.

Where is the best place to source Matt emulsion paint at a reasonable price?
Every surface needs 2 coats of 50/50 mist (minimum) and all bar 2 walls are being brilliant white as the final colour.

We used to use a local supplier who gave us 20lt drums but their price has gone up literally by 68%! And with the new managers attitude I would think they will be going under by years end!!

We are based in the north Essex area fyi.

What is your definition of reasonable as all prices have gone through the roof, Brewers 10lt Dulux Trade White Vinyl Matt £61.30 :(, same paint at Screwfix £42.99 or the retail version 10lt £21.99, again at Screwfix Leyland Contract matt 10lt £16.99...question of looking around really.

Leyland contract Matt white is very reasonably priced...often on offer at TS/SF for 2 x 10L for £26. I use this when spraying out bare plaster on refurbs and it’s more than adequate as a final finish on the majority of jobs also. If I want fancier colours, then I’ll go to a Johnstone’s decorator centre and get them to mix up from any of the ‘fancy pants’ palettes such as F & B.

Just asking, is finding paint at a ‘reasonable price’ the main deciding factor on where and what paint to use or is ‘suitability and quality’ also to be considered ?

Contract Matt may be cheap but not hard wearing, not wipeable, not best suited to bathrooms or kitchens as it also absorbs steam (and dirt) and not that practical for high traffic areas / stairwells / busy houses with kids / etc

Maybe ok as a mist coat but surely the newly plastered walls and ceilings deserve something a little better and harder wearing than bog standard trade Matt (realise you haven’t suggested that yourself)

I agree that there are better paints, but it depends on situation and budget. I generally use it for mist coating, often using an airless sprayer, but on certain properties it’s used as the finish coat, especially if there’s all likelihood that it’ll get redecorated the moment someone moves in and wants to personalise it.

Also, rental properties that may have a reasonably high turnover of tenants. You can put a more durable paint on, but when someone’s thrown a wobbler, and there’s blood and snot everywhere, you’re still going to need to clean down and repaint rather than just wipe down.

Nothing wrong with it on ceilings either and tbf, most wouldn’t know the difference.

Albany Supercover is good for mist coats and ceilings, £33 for 12 litres

3 story house, 4 bedroom, new plaster on every surface …… so that would have cost a few quid eh ? Plastering don’t come cheap (for a quality job at least)

Why would you then penny pinch on the paint ?

I’ve just bought 10lt Johnstone’s Trade Durable Matt, colour matched to something or other, very nice paint, takes a good dollop of water to get to a usable consistency so your actually getting more than 10lt

Cost £110.00, but so far it’s done 2 coats in 3 rooms, ok, not huge rooms but even so, just over £30 quid for quality paint on each room is good value I would say, for a durable, washable paint that will last

I only pay £5 for 5lt of Johnstones Trade Durable.......honest.

Well, what can I say, that’s clearly an excellent, almost unbelievable price …. And that’s for a tinted colour ? Or white ?

I used a local, independent supplier that I’ve used for years, £55 for 5lt and I got 2, didn’t shop around - didn’t have the time and I’m obviously rich :)

Just looked at a few online prices after reading your post, all Johnstones Durable Matt Acrylic, 5lt tinted

    Brewers £58.26
    Paint Shed £43.38
    Decorating Warehouse £47.95

Obviousely you get trade prices but even so, £5 for 5lt of same paint seems ridiculously cheap ? Almost unbelievable ?

Yes & No Dave....the catch is.....Managers specials....wrongly tinted colours are sold to clear, Little Green, Dulux Trade, Johnstones, Crown and so on, cant go wrong for a £iver if the colour suits, I have only ever selected the pastel tones so a pretty safe choice, also it has helped out a few very senior in age customers who are not too well heeled. :)

when spraying mist coats, you get through a lot of paint, but you go from bare plaster to solid white extremely quickly.

In this instance the Leyland is tough to beat for the money

Fortunately for me Astra, there was an offer on, just when I was about to start painting my own house refurb from top to bottom.

I still need to buy a colour for the lounge, may possibly run out of the satin, but can’t argue with those prices. All F&B colours too.

Thanks for the reply guys. For some reason I got locked out of the forum for a few days and only just stopped now for a chance to reply.

Went with the layland contract, going on lovely but the sprayer threw a wobbler (check the forum for a thread soon seeing if anyone has any ideas!)

No they are managers specials, paint ordered by customers and not collected, have done well with Little Greene emulsion, also all brands of emulsion paint tinted wrong shade is ideal for rentals dead inexpensive priced to clear generally 5 litres all circa £5 to clear. Also being there at the right time helps. :)
