Brand new depretiates so quickly though.

  2. Yes it loses roughly about 20 percent when you drive it off the forecourt. There is also the extra tax to pay on first registration, how much depending on vehicle.

Ah, yes it has. I guess that explains the price - the supplying dealer has to shift stock. It's still 'effectively' brand new, and I expect would come with the full manufacturer's warranty.

It's just an option, that's all.

Best story I know about cars is what happened to my Mum.

Bought a brand new Corsa. Seemed ok for the first month or so, then seemed to become really underpowered.

Took it back a few times, response was there is nothing wrong.

Took it back again after about another 6 mths, as it was going in my Mum had a look around at a few different models. Took I think a Meriva for a test drive. Decided to have one. Made a beeline for the chap who always told her it the Corsa was perfect. Got him to agree a really really good part exchange price. I think it was about £1500 less than she paid brand new.

Got a great price on the Meriva too as it was on some kind of offer. Took the Meriva there and then. Bearing in mind all this time the "perfect" Corsa is in being looked at. Gets home and the workshop rings telling her the Corsa needs a warranty engine and gearbox replacement. Her response was. "Sorry but I dont own the Corsa anymore. You do!"

My current run-around is a mk3 Mondeo estate, bought privately for 250 quid with 11 months MOT. All electric, A/C, runs great and if it fails it's next test I get 150 for scrap.

Do you think it is worth paying an extra £1k for the new C1 with 0 mileage and 67 plate as opposed to the 15 plate with 32k on it (£5k in price)

It's £1.8k more, so significant. I guess it all depends on how badly you need that extra money.

You did really well to knock £500 off that other car so that looks like a decent deal too, and with the warranty it should see you happy for a good while. Well, at least a year :)

The 'new' one at £6.8k is very significantly discounted, though; that must be a good £3k off the normal OTR price? (It 'lists' at £11k to £12k, though of course no-one pays that).

Your call, but IF that 'new' car comes with a FULL manufacturer's warranty from the day you'd drive it away, and not a warranty that began a year ago, then I think I would take it as long as the extra outlay wouldn't hurt.

In theory the new one isn't going to cost you a further penny for years, except for normal running costs. The 3-year old car will require new front discs and pads in a year or so - a couple of £undred - brake fluid change - a ton - and new front & rear tyres if not done recently - a ton-fifty per axle.

That's a good price for the 3-year old one, but a cracking price for a newie.

Yea, they want £6,495 for the 67 plate one. Apparently it was their demo vehicle and its done 700 miles.

I rang them today and they wont budge on the price.

    Tempted to buy it.

Insurance are giving me £3,750 for my write off (£4k but £250 excess taken off). Put that against the 67 plate C1 would mean me contributing £2,745 toward the 67 plate. That a good deal?

It says on the ad "Or pay a cash price of £6,795" - the £6,495 price is if you take out finance with them, so has a £300 discount with that option. Are you sure they said £6,495 for 'cash'?

I now realise that it isn't really 'new', but is a year old although that is with insignificant mileage. It will have the balance of the manufacturer's warranty - clearly the best you can have - which is for a further 2 years, whereas the '15-plate will rely on a second-hand dealer warranty for one year which should be ok but can be variable.

The '17 plate shouldn't cost you a further penny for a couple of years or more, whereas I think you can anticipate a few £undred at least on the '15 plate as some serviceable parts are wearing out; front pads & discs, tyres, etc as said before - this is normal stuff, but you'll still have to pay for it. So, expect to add a few hundred costs over the next year or so on top of the '15-plate's purchase price.

'Honest John' gives this valuation on CV67 RKJ @ 1k miles:

At a dealer, aim to pay between £6,800 and £8,350 (The large variation is usually down to condition.)
At a franchised dealer, expect to pay £7,850.
At an independent dealer, expect to pay £7,300

The £5k for the '15 plate is a good price since you knocked them down, but there are plenty others out there for the pre-discount price or so, so it isn't an 'exceptional' deal, just a 'good' one. On the other hand, I would suggest that £6.5k for the sub-1k mile '17-plater is an exceptional deal, and you won't find another.

I've talked myself in to it - I know what I would do! Go on - get a buzz from a near-spanking new car :)

I can't comment on whether your insurance payout on your Swift is fair as I don't know its details. You could try entering the same spec vehicle, age and mileage in to Autotrader and see if you could replace your swift - like-for-like - for £4k. If you sort of can, then it's fair. If you cannot, it isn't.

Honest John's valuation for the 15-plater is:

Citroen C1 2015 1.0 Feel Manual Petrol VTi

    Most are between
    £5,490 and £5,999

We see cars like this for sale
    7 times a day

At a dealer, aim to pay between £5,300 and £6,200
At a franchised dealer, expect to pay £6,000.
At an independent dealer, expect to pay £5,600.
