Wire Up Power To Garage Via Consumer Unit

Can anyone explain how to wire in a wire from the house consumer unit?

I have some electrics in my garage which have been fine for years even with using a welder etc.. but the power currently all comes from a socket in the house and of course I know this isn’t really right and probably not entirely safe.

I just need to know what size wire to get and how to wire it in the house consumer unit…

That will be a new circuit and will be subject to the Building Regulations Part P and require notification.

Your best option is to employ a registered electrician to install, test and notify it on your behalf. Much cheaper than generating your own building notice.

In the main government rules mean you can't at a reasonable cost DIY this work without breaking the law.

Batt cables publish the charts showing what cables can carry under the different installation methods, in general a garage to store the car in, only needs a 13 amp supply, but a garage to refuel the car, i.e. charge the batteries on an EV, needs around 6 mm sq for the 7 kW and some data cables to tell the charger when the house is getting near the maximum and it needs to reduce the charge rate.

A workshop is not the same as a garage, neither is a garden room or any other name given to a converted garage, I get charged an extra £1000 a year for my converted garage, so be careful.

To be frank I don't understand why we have never blown the 60 amp fuse, 3 bathrooms, 2 kitchens, plus utility room means our demands can be high, now we have the ability to see what we are using, LuxPowerView 13.09.jpg so we can select when the dish washer, washing machine, tumble drier etc is used, although I don't shower with my phone so can't see if other shower is in use.

But we use in general a lot less than out supply will permit, and if a fused connection unit (FCU) is reasonably central on a ring final, before any damage is done the fuse will rupture. It is only when we miss fitting the protection devices that the problem arises.

What you actually need to know is....the name of a good registered local electrician.
