Take the advice of state-it! It's like most jobs, a simple enough job but only if you know what you're doing.

yep... time to put your hand in your pocket

Also you get the added bonus of your downlighters bein in a straight line

Come come gentlemen! You're being rather uncharitable about this simple request.

If you can't be bothered to help the O/P then you shouldn't trouble yourselves to reply at all.

If the O/P returns to this post following your silly remarks, I'll be pleased to help him.

Lucia.

presumably you'll help with his building notification (should it fall into a special location) and testing???

You presume too much Dale. I have no idea whether this job is 'notifiable' from the information so far - and neither do you.

It's not up to me to lecture a DIYer on notification procedures. I don't give a fig for Part P when I'm on this forum in my free time - I have quite enough of the wretched thing during my working week.

If the O/P returns to this thread, I'll be pleased to advise him how to do this simple job, and how to do it safely.

If you're unwilling to help the O/P, then you ought to bugger orf to another thread.

Mr sillys, Thats the old way of doing it, you know its not like that now

This work is most likely notifiable to your local council. It will involve cutting holes in your ceiling which will reduce the fire resistance of the ceiling.

The downlights must restore the fire resistant properties of the ceiling, meaning fire rated or fire hoods.

You will need to run another cable from the switch to the light fitting area. You must also ensure the existing circuit is adequately protected and can accommodate the additional loading.

I assume you mean a 2 gang switch not 2 way. You need to add a joint box, transformer and ensure the elv cable is of the correct size for the intended loading and length.

I respectfully suggest you consult a local professional for advice, to enable you to do some of the installation work, but you are asking alot as the professional will have to take responsibility for your work which is shady to say the least.

Although I believe thats much better than having a go without sufficient understanding, before the rest of the baying sparks shoot me down!!

Sorry, taking responsibility for others work is shady at best, not your work is shady, I have no knowledge of your capabilities.

Looch,

I gave up trying to instruct people with limited knowledge in chat room to wire this scenario up years ago

Best thing IMHO is for the OP to get a spark in to ***** whats what.

If you want to explain in detail how to do this, by all means feel free, but I think you know, there are times when a forum has its limitations and this has to be an example

You need to pull a new single and earth into your switch to the existijng ceiling rose. Thats the only way you can do it. I assume you mean 2-gang switch. Then you need to connect a T&E from the rose to your new lights to complete the job.

And there lays the OPs problem unphased!!

How does he pull another ''single'' to the switch??

Unless this is a relatively old house from the 50's or a little earlier, in which case he may have a conduit or slip conduit switch drop in the wall. He may then be able to replace the Twin or T&E with a 3 core & E.

But no conduit drop, then no-way, not unless he chases the capped cable out, and replaces that way....
