Hi can anyone help me please, i am having a woodburner installed and i have got some 15mmm natural slate to build the surround and a hearth. Is slate a suitable material to do this with and if so what are the best adhesives/grout to use which will be able to stand the heat?

  2. See here:-

    Second illustration on the RHS.

The only thing I wouldn't use would be the epoxy grout, ghastly stuff to apply, I would just use the wide joint grout.

Saying that soot and ash will discolour an ordinary grout.

You will also need to seal the slate before grouting and again after the grout has dried.

I can't find the right stuff on SFD (I'm sure they used to do it but I can't see it now) and the best stuff to use is:-

It will be available from your local tile supppliers.

It's also good idea to clean and reseal the slate every year.

asside from the grout you should check that the burner is suitable for installing on a 15mm hearth....the handbook for the burner or the stove fitter should be able to tell you...as far as I am aware.this is part of building regs compliance
