    Hello

Any tips how to reinforce the surroundings of the chiseled out section for the latch retainer? Post is 3 inch square with rounded edges.

    thanks

Thanks for your reply. At which points would you affix to?

I would let it in flush to the uncut face of the timber fixed with epoxy glue and screwed in place and painted satin black to match the existing door furniture.

Don't bother. Apply a bit of preservative and leave it at that.

Thanks for the help. Have braced from the inside with non protruding brackets, will preserve and paint in black as recommended.
