Is it permissible to connect a dishwasher (4KW Total load) into a ring main via an FCU or would a separate feed from the consumer unit be advisable

    4kW must be on it's own circuit - It's around 18amps.

    A 4kw dishwasher?

Is this an industrial(commercial) dishwasher or a domestic dishwasher.

Most appliances come with a 13Amp plug fitted as standard so it won't be 4kw. Max power for a dishwasher on a 13Amp plug i would have said would not exceed 2.8kw max.

So yes, anything higher than 2.8kw rating on a 13Amp plug requires a dedicated circuit and you would probably need to use a plug and socket capable of that current rating such as a 32Amp commando socket.

It's a replacement commercial DW to be fitted in a bowling club. The original plated at 4KW was hardwired into the kitchen ring via an FCU, it must have had either downgraded elements or too large a fuse(Long gone) in the FCU as it's been there for nearly 20 years and the building's still standing. Think the answer is to twist the treasurer's arm for a new supply. The attraction of the higher rated machines is a quicker recovery time between washes. Thank you both for your interest in my query.

Sounds like you'll need a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, 2.5mm cable and 20 amp mcb. Possibly 4mm if a very long cable run.
