    Hi all,

I have always wanted a Dremel.

Recently, I have got into whittling..... just farting around carving (terribly) bits of wood. I thought I could do some really cool things if I had a Dremel with some attachments suitable for wood.

    Does anyone have any advice?

There are lots of 'fake' ones on Amazon which are much cheaper! Does anyone have any experience of these? Or should I just fork out for a good one? If so, any recommendations? There are many models!

I was also thinking a flexible shaft would be a handy bit of kit if I want to carve odd-shaped bits of wood!

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    I used a Dremel ( I think it was a 300 ) in my workshop for about 13 years.

When it packed in I replaced it with a current model Dremel 3000 which felt a bit cheaper ( it was cheaper ) & didn't seem to hold a steady speed but worked acceptably. After about 10 months it started behaving erratically ( vibrating badly etc ) so I returned it under guarantee & got another 3000. That stopped working after a couple of days so I got a refund & decided to try the cheapo Titan knock off. The speed control didn't work so I got another refund.

I ended up with the more expensive Dremel 4250 which feels much more solid & is still going after about 8 months of regular use. But it's a noisy b****r & always sounds a bit 'rough' to me so who knows how well it will last. ( Maybe it needs a bit extra lubrication ).

We have the flexible shaft which my partner uses on glass. Have a look on YouTube for advice on how to use it.

The 4250 comes in various kits some of which are pricey - it might be cheaper toby a basic kit & buy the flexi shaft separately.

I'm sure Festool will do a very nice multitool.

Thank you both for such helpful replies!

It certainly is a 'luxury' tool for me at the moment. That being said, there has been certain jobs it would have been ideal for! I do have a cheap multi-tool, but not quite the same overlap of duties!

Have had my Dremel for many years - battery is now failing! Plenty of uses and a flexi-shaft is a must for intricate work.

I also had a Chain Saw Sharpening attachment - a great investment.

A friend recently was in the market for one and chose a Proxxon. Wehen looking some of the cheap stuff really is worthy of te big found pemanent filing cabinet.
