When is a dedicated earth and spike required for a building? My 'hobby room in detached garage' project has 3 core 4mm armoured cable from the house CU to the garage CU which is a metre away, will it need an earth, what size, and where can the spike go? The cable is fitted with metal internal gland kits both ends and both CU's are plastic. Thanks for any advice.

    Hi OP,

    i) Have you got any metallic water/gas feeds or other extraneous-conductive-parts coming in to the shed.
ii) Is your supply earthing system PME (there will be a label attached at the main incomer if it is) ?

If you answer 'Yes' to both then you don't export your house installation earth to the shed, and use an earth-rod instead.

Otherwise you can export the house earth to the shed.
