I am installing 18mm engineered flooring in my lounge, which has 18mm exterior ply fixed to floor joists which are 600mm apart, I am using a flooring nailer, I have some 5mm thick silver backed underlay which I was going to lay underneath, is this needed or a bad idea any advice please

I think you'll find that the underlay is unnecessary. Just nail it directly to the ply.
