Hi, I may not have got this quite right but the Building control inspector was round to check on drains for a project and she mentioned the foundations for the extension we are starting in spring. We are on 'medium clay' and she said we would need 1.3m increasing to 1.4 deep foundations due to trees/hedges/gremlins. She also said something about having expansion material around the mass foundation in case the clays swells...?
What is this or have I got it wrong?

No she mean "Clayboards" it's a firm type of Polystyrene.

You normally only need it on the inner face, but BCo will say what's required.

PS: Dont try cheating by using cheap polystyrene they will know as clayboard is dyed pink. :)

Normally only required where founds exceed 1500. \What does your designer say about depths?

The BI said 1.3 mts at the front increasing to 1.4 mts deep at the back.

Really????? Used it loads of times in standard 1 metre founds, but I do live in a very clay area, weirdly enough though i wasn't ask to use it at my own house which is solid clay.
