    Hi all

We have previously had a shower fitted some years back by a plumber.

He made a right mess of it. Put the enclosure on upside down and didn't finish the pipe work nicely. Plus problems with it leaking.

Really is a crappy job but was done years ago.

    My main question is -

He has fitted the shower tray directly on to the floor. So the waste must be between the joists.

As I have a look around in different people's houses the shower trays seem to be on legs or supported on timber. We had two quotes at the time and the other plumber was going to raise it and run piping around the room.

We have had many leaks over the years has been resealed etc.

Be good to know your thoughts. Thanks

It depends on a few factors how you do the job, normally the size of the void you can get pipework into
    What the original pipework is,
What the fall on the waste is no point in putting in the ceiling void if you can't get the fall and no point in redoing a shower that way if the customer has always had poor drainage

I normally use a plinth kit with the matching shower tray so everything fits

I've seen so many showers fitted to plasterboard and only a finish seal round the top of the tray, we usually use aqua board then tank out the walls with a tanking kit, fit the plinth kit and then the tray with a fitting bead of sealant some 12mm thick, tile down to it, assemble and fit the enclosure to the manufactures instructions the do a finish seal of about 6mm. Always use top quality grout and tile adhesive and good sealants for both the fitting seal and the finishing seal

That's the other thing I can't see how there can be much of a fall. The waste length is probably less 1.5 meter to where it enters the toilet waste.

I think when we are having long showers it starts to leak.

Guessing this is why. I'll have to investigate more.

Thanks for the info! I can see By your post why you probably don't get call backs with the extra protection. Think he bodged it tbh. But I should find out before I curse him too much :)

I prefer to do a job once right and build it like a brick s#*t house rather than going back for a leak and redoing work. I've upgraded waste to 50mm on some showers, small waste was ok when showers were a dribble but now with rain showers and body jets flooding a cubicle often larger drainage is needed as is specialist grouts, tiles and sealants at times .
