wife goes into the kitchen start shouting, "O MY GOD, look at this", i go out there and the paper on the ceiling is coming down with water dripping through, i run up to bathroom to see whats going on, on removal of bath panel I see this.

A big hole under the bath in the floor, on closer inspection I find this in the hole sitting directly on the plaster board of the kitchen ceiling.

The towels are soaking wet the bowl was full to the brim???, this bathroom was fitted 11 years ago, (before my time) but my wife had it done just after she moved in, I can't see any obvious leaks at the moment but have just spent the last 3 hours tidying up so will look tomorrow.

This is what I'm left with so far.

It look like the bath overflow has been leaking a little bit when the bludy kids have a bath and fill it to top.

Why the bowl was put there in the first place is beyond me, wife is adamant that it's not been touched since it was fitted, so did the fitter notice a leak and did this knowing he be long gone before any problems .

The plumbing leaves a lot to be desired as well, bath hot 22mm to 15mm flexible plastic pipe for a foot or so then back to 22mm at the tap, could have easily run 22mm straight to tap.

Earth bonding also goes cold pipe to hot pipe to one of the baths legs .

Plumbers did something similar when my dad first had central heating fitted in about 1971. A plastic bowl with a towel/rags in it placed below a very slight leak in pipework in the attic. Took about 6 months for any sign to manifest itself as the leak would drip into the bowl and the towel/rags aided evaporation of the water. Eventually it managed to fill the bowl and started dripping onto the plasterboard ceiling. Of course, the plumbers said , "It wasn't us who did that." Yeah right.
