Hi all after a successful landscaping career over the last 19 years cut short by a reoccurring back injury. I have decided to offer my experience and knowledge as a landscape and construction consultant. As many people know the trades are littered with rouges and tradesmen willing to cut corners. Knowledge of how things should be undertaken seems to be drifting further away. I am currently acting as a consultant for a small number of previous industry contacts and feel I can offer theses services online to a larger audience. Would the public feel this service would be of Benifit to both homeowners and businesses alike? Any suggestions or constructive comment welcome. Regards Landscape Consultant
Are you suitably qualified to offer the services as a consultant. Years in the trade help of course, but unless you hold certificates and other qualifications, you could find yourself in a bit of bother. Landscaping as you will know is often carried out by our Irish friends, you know the sort that don't hang around to long, so start dissing their work and your likely to end up under a driveway. This is something I've offer thought if doing myself, but can't be arsed with the grief.
You may find that you'll get asked a lot more construction related questions as opposed to landscaping problems, as people tend to feel a bit more confident about messing with their garden as nothing's really life threatening for them in that respect, but if you're not as experienced in advising people on different types of foundations for example or how to build the hipped roof on their new annex then you may not get the response you anticipate. Another thing to consider is how do you propose to earn money from this business venture, as most people prefer free advice, hence why we're conversing on a trade advice forum! What would happen if you gave advice and something went wrong and your customer tried to pin it on you? "Well I only gave advice" doesn't stand up in a court, especially if they can show they paid you for your input. I probably come across as really negative but I'm not sticking the knife in mate, I'm a realist, but if you are to proceed you need to set yourself up to stand out from the crowd somehow.
Hi thanks for the comments. I have 18 years checkable experience and hold qualification in Horiculture, brickwork, all site site tickets, street works etc.. Alongside always having a workforce of around 6-7 I am currently making a decent wage via a few companies using me as a consultant to arrange specialist materials, drawing take offs etc. Ideally I would like to help the public as well. Currently I work on retainer contracts in which I allow at set amount of time per week/month. Additional works are costed a a set fee.
