    Hi

Just started painting new plaster which had dried out and the plasterer said could be painted and in patches the plaster looked mottled and the paint just won't adhere. Put weak solution of dulux emulsion/water 50/50 as a first coat and 2 walls are fine but where the mottling on the plaster was the paint just slides off. Any help appreciated. The plaster was put on brick over what looked like grey roughcoat which the plasterer scratched over and then did the topcoat of pink plaster. The patched seem to have something in the mix that rejects the paint. HELP

Speak to the plasterer, either there is an additive or the plaster was still wet in those areas.

Sounds more like the results of PVA splashed all over!

I hope you didnt upset the plasterer, if you did he may have "polished up" that section of plaster with a plastic bag.............its a trick some of them used to use to stop the paint from adhering...................if the painter ****** 'em off!!!!!!

    Hi Patdoy

I had this exact problem a couple of years ago and turned to this forum for help and advice
Got several replies and remedies to try and in the end the only solution was to seal the walls using an oil based undercoat and short pile roller

Several people on here dissagreed with this method but to be honest, it was the only solution that worked
Once undercoat had dried then topcoated with emulsion as per normal, brilliant end result

I think the cause was a combination of the plasterers splashing around the pva onto finished plaster and also sections being over polished - as h & h mentions. Don't remember seeing the plasterer using a plastic bag but do remember him going over and over sections of the wall leaving a glass like finish. Friends that saw the finished plaster were well impressed with the quality finish, yeah brilliant until you try and paint it !

Good luck and let the forum know how you get on
