Had it installed 20 years ago when I moved in. It's just classic mahogany, and now I want to paint it black (by hand, btw).

Was curious to see what paint I should go for (brand wise) and if it'd be safe to just sand it down and apply? Spindles and bannister are in great condition and don't need any filling. Not to fussed about it being satinwood or eggshell.

Is it bare timber or does it have a finish coat on it?

Finish. Just classic mahogany woodstain methinks.

I would flat it back pretty hard with 180g and firstly coat up with a decent aluminium primer. My choice would be then 2 dulux trade undercoats and 1 dulux satinwood or gloss, all oil based. Appreciate lots of other options and water based finishes but that's how I finish hardwood timber.
