Repainting window frames

Discussion in 'Painters' Talk' started by Deleted member 25896, Nov 10, 2014.

  1. The window frames at the in-laws have obviously been repainted some time ago but the "new" paint is peeling off. Could you recommend a primer that would allow a better key to the original paint.
Additionally, there is a small area of rot on the window cill. Is there a better solution than treating it with Cuprinol rot fluid and then filling with two part filler. We are trying to defer the expense of replacement windows.
    Thanks for your help.

"New paint is peeling off" Sounds like Gloss on Gloss. If so, light rub down and then undercoat it. Rub rub down again. U/c will tighten the old paint up and stop it from peeling off in sheets.

Sounds like Gloss on Gloss indeed - without having been sanded in between... Someone's been lazy! Had the old paint still been in OK condition and if they'd sanded in between, then it would have been fine. Now you'll have to remove the 'new' layers of paint - not just anything that's coming off easily now, but also anything that's perhaps still sticking and looks alright, as it'll create even more work when those parts start peeling off in future, along with your latest layers of paint... Sanding is key and don't skimp on the quality of undercoat and gloss you're going to use.

As far as the rot is concerned - I've never used those fluids so can't really comment on them. I can imagine though that the best way to go is simply removing the rotting wood completely and then filling or replacing parts of the wood.

  4. Thanks guys. Can you recommend a decent undercoat? Do you think weathershield is worth the extra cost?

Weathershield is a very good paint, any good quality undercoat will do though - Dulux or Johnston's is a good alternative.
