Had a quote to install a 2.7m SHS vertical windpost in inner skin of a cavity wall, just wanted to check that it's not overpriced: Supply 2.7m tall, 100x100x5mm SHS windpost, with steel baseplate and top fin plate pre-attached, and shot-fired/spot-welded frame cramps every 440mm Chase out inner wall bricks to 100mm depth, wide enough to slot in the post Chase out mortar beds every few courses to enable slotting in of the frame cramps Fit a 410mm tall padstone below floor level Bolt the windpost to the padstone and to the upper floor joist, fill the mortar around the frame cramps and around the length of the windpost Make good the wall (e.g. plaster over) Is a quote of £1000 too much for this work? How long should it take? Builders will already be onsite doing other works in that room. What fire protection is necessary for the SHS, given that it will be embedded in the wall and plastered over? Or will they have to cover it in some other way, e.g. Supalux fire resistant board? This would only be 9mm, rather than the usual 25mm of standard plasterboard found on RSJs.
