    I have a 54x17" one-piece slate hearth (for a gas outset fire), 30mm thick.
There's an existing concrete sub-hearth, flush with the timber floor, measuring 48" in place, so the slate will overlap by about 6" each end.

I'm planning to put about 8 mm of tile adhesive down on the sub hearth and timber at each end, then a 12nm hardiebacker board on that. Hearth goes on top.

Bearing in mind the overlap, is there any danger of the slate cracking?

    thanks in advance,

According to your numbers, the slate will overlap 3" at each end, which is not so bad!

It won't crack unless someone jumps up and down on it. Can't you just fill in the three inch overhangs with some nicely prepared timber and varnish it to match the floor or prime it and paint it matt black. Overhangs will look very strange in my opinion.
Re-reading your post did you intend to do this anyway?
If you did it will be OK.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, I was going to put some support under the ends anyway - and the stonemasons' seem pretty confident it'll be OK
    Thanks again,
