Victorian Pathway?

We are having the front garden of our Victorian terrace landscaped at present. Part of the plan was to have a new black and white Victorian path laid. However on lifting the current paving we have uncovered the original victorian tiles.

We are unsure what to do with this and whether it is worth trying to save the tiles and re-lay them.

There path is considerably lower than the pavement so keeping it as it is is not really an option.

The path seems to be in a reasonable condition but there are a number of tiles missing.

Is reconditioning the original tiles and sourcing reclaimed tiles to fill in the gaps a viable option ?

The path is a red, black, yellow and grey mix of varying sizes.

We really need some advice as to whether a restoration project would be worthwhile and cost effective or whether a better option would be to install a replica pathway.

Clean up the path and make a step up to the Main Street

I fear that now they have been re-exposed, they will break up very easily. Not very thick and doesn't look too solid underneath.

  4. There are companies that specialise in restoring exactly this. Google them in your area. But seeing as you're mentioning cost effective, you might be better off searching YouTube for a DIY tutorial.

Cleaning up the path would mean sourcing the missing tiles and what would I do about the base, may not be solid enough?

    This is a good find.

These are refereed to as geometric tiles. There is a company that this makes them called Original Style, which are sold by most independent tiling places. When I was digging up my path I was hoping to find something like this.

If you still have a lead water supply pipe to your property, look at doing this now as well, more work I know but need to do work in order. Once build a small solid dwarf wall built using Flemish bond (or similar to the house) with stone copings on top. A step is not a good idea, especially for prams.

it really depends on how easy they are to clean up.

If you are short of tiles, dig up the neighbors path to make up for any shortages if they are happy.

In our house on pavement when the contractor had resurfaced the tarmac they have left a dip, which regularly collects water, I am looking to install a linear channel for this.
