   Bought a 2.0 petrol bora today, knew the exhaust had a hole in that needed welding, when I was driving it they engine management light came on, could this be because of the hole in the exhaust?

   Depends where the hole is, if it's before the Lambda sensor then it could cause the light to come on due to the ECU thinking the engine is running to weak.
   
   I wouldn't mess about welding a hole, just change the damaged pipe.
