Usually about 10mm but do a test first.

I've just noticed there's a number 9 and a 51 engraved on the barell of the anchor, does this mean use a 9mm bit?

    Probably not.

9 represents the thickness of the plasterboard or substrate, 51 is the screw length in mm.

Make sure the bolt is in and just screwed to keep the length when pushing into your hole. Otherwise if your hole is a bit tight, it can bend the expanding lugs inward, and when you come to tighten it, they will try to bend inwards, which is no good.

I think the 8-16 is the thickness of plasterboard!
