What to put on hardwood window frames

My window frames are looking really tired - I need to sand them back and treat them I think. They have a mahogany type stain on them currently. When I have sanded, what do I put on them? Stain followed by an oil of some kind, or a varnish?

    Cheers

Painting will offer the best protection and the simplest maintenance.

If you use a varnish the water will seep underneath it eventually, so make sure it's an exterior wood stain, (Sadolin is one of the brands) as easier to prep when the time comes to recoat as well.
