I'm trying to lap a old draper chisel with 60 grit wet & dry but it's just polishing it so do I need a different sandpaper for chrome vanadium.
Get it close by what ever means you have and then fettle it with something gentler, just don't blue it.
The angle is important for a bevel edge it's 25 degrees , & some do a second bevel at 30 degrees. A lot easier if you have a chiseling sharpening jig.
He appears to just have some sandpaper K, i'm trying to go back to basics as that's all he has, I've sharpened drills and chisels on 9" grinders before now.
Never knew they went that low with wet. Did some car spraying and the lowest we used was 600. 1200 on a chisel gives you a mirror on the bevel. Shaptons go to 30,000.
Yes it does, P60 grade got about about a dozen sheets here. EDIT: http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/m/MIR211/
What is P60 omn a roll. I watched a video on youtube where they used 80 grit wet and dry and they got abrasion marks but when I rub my chisel over 60 grit wet and dry it just polishes the blade so I cannot tell how flat the back is.
Nothing yet. Got a load of Wet & Dry paper off Freecycle or Freegle, & it include P60 throught to P5000 grades .
Buy yourself a good oil stone or Diamond Sharpening Stone, either are usually double sided, in various combinations of coarse, medium & fine.
I do have a new Norton oilstone but at the moment I cannot find it so I thought I would give sandpaper a go. Diamond stones are expensive so I don't think it's worth buying one for the amount of time I will use a chisel.
