What do you guys recommend please? Metal door (white) in average condition with some flaking and a few tiny rust spots. Hoping that there's an all-in-one that will suffice and don't mind a tin of elbow grease on the preparation if that's what's called for. Gloss or satin acceptable.
PVA first... This stuff is good for rust treatment: http://www.wilko.com/metal-and-spec...-1-rust-beater-paint-beige-250ml/invt/2437546 It's a rust treatment and primer. I used it in a few places on the van, cleaned up the paintwork well.
Barn paint arrived on Friday - two coats applied with foam roller to both doors after thorough prep - looks great. Many thanks for the recommendation.
Have not used a foam roller with Barn Paint myself I use a fine 4" emulsion roller laid of with a brush.
Can that be overpainted with other types of paints - water or oil based - or does it have to be Hammerite (which uses cellulose base I think?)?
I use a foam mini-roller when applying water-based satin paints to woodwork like interior window cills and unit tops - finish slowly and it leaves the very faintest of textures, and of course no brush marks. Basically looks like the finish you get on melamine cupboards and stuff - quite 'pro' looking. (If you roll too fast it can produce bubbles!)
That's what I've tried to achieve on the garage doors - it's satin paint. I'm pleased with it any way and a massive improvement on what was there. The previous owner had got paint all over the door handles/locks so I took those off and sprayed them - much smarter job.
