I'm not a builder/electrician but need some advice! I live in an average semi. My neighbours want to install a lift because one of them has problems going up the stairs. It will run alongside the wall of my child's room.

A friend tells me our electricity could dip whenever it's used.

Am also worried about the noise of a lift going up and down at all hours - will it wake my kid up etc.

    Should I be worried?!

I don't see how it could affect you in terms of your electricity supply.

Domestic lifts connect via a 13amp supply, very little load, inverter driven, no dipping supply.

As for the noise? A little, but no noisier than say a kettle or microwave.

No, I can't see it affecting your electrics. With regard to noise, I suppose it does depend on how solid your dividing wall is, but these things don't travel at the speed of a Tube train.

    Domestic lifts are usually quiet.
    Either hydraulic or motor operation.

What is so special about inverters, you see it mentioned a lot to do with air conditioning. I understand that an inverter converts DC to AC, if you already have AC available (mains) why would you need to go to DC so you can use an inverter to get back to AC?

DC motors are usually much more 'controllable', via an inverter, soft start etc.

Inverters can soft start (ramp the speed up slowly), so no switch on surge.
