Thanks. I have to take nut length into consideration to get it all in

You can partly disassemble the fitting into the cistern to give you more space to work by undoing the external back nut and pulling the fitting into the cistern whilst you loosely fit things together.

  4. Although not ideal, it should also be possible to add a further rubber washer to the inside (of the cistern) for that threaded pipe so as to effectively shorten how much sticks out the bottom. But you'd have to ensure there's enough to allow the connector's nut to fully screw on.

These 'tangs' on the plastic nut could be trimmed off too if that helps with this mod.

  5. Stemoz, where does the pipe have to go after it's elbowed off that inlet?

And what is the actual gap betwixt the end of the plastic threaded pipe and the bottom of the unit - is that only 30mm?

  7. That makes it easier, then, since he won't even need to rely on a perfect seal if he messes with the washers - it should be above the water line :)

Add another 5mm rubber/foam washer to the inside, and bring that end away from the side by the same amount. Trim the nut if needed.
