Dodgy Hep2o fittings!

  1. I once replaced a 1 y.o. Vaillant boiler for someone under their insurance who claimed a plastic joint came apart!

I inspected the joint and it had multiple score marks on the pipe.

I dont know who had done that but it would not surprise me if it was the householder! He was an ex policemen and had since used his knowledge of their procedures to claim about £30,000 for wrongful arrest issues using his specialist knowledge of how he should have been dealt with.

Got called to the mother-inlaws at 3am one morning.
Water pouring through the kitchen ceiling.

One of these fittings had blown off the mains cold water pipe in the bathroom.
Had been fitted by a plumber 2 years previous when he re-fitted the bathroom.
MIL claim off her house insurance after the original plumber stated to her that the pipe must have frozen!
Even though it was below zero outside, the problem was INSIDE her bathroom!

I NEVER use any push fit fittings (except a shower pump that had them as standard fittings) give me a solded copper joint every time.

I have seen a 22mm Speedfit connector fail when something rested on the fitting and pushed the release ring into the fitting. This happened on a stable block in a stately home I worked at. No real damage apart from wet horses. But I have seen fittings weeping when they have been joined close to a cupboard etc and the release ring is being pressed.
As I said before, I have seen several solder joints fail over the years but I believe it is usually the result of clumsy DIY'ers turning a compression fitting and twisting the pipe.

As another question. Was your 22mm pipework clipped in any way?
Yeah of course it was clipped. 1 above & 1 below.
I didn't test water pressure cos I don't carry that sort of gear. (kitchen fitter by trade), but I do know that the pressure wasn't that great when it was coming out the tap.
Dishwasher was tested as I always do before leaving a job, and no probs there. It's an odd one, as the pipe came off 2 weeks after it was fitted.
Still we live & learn, and I will be using good old soldered joints from now on!!
